SECOND
LEUTENANT CHRISTOPHER JAMES EDWARD VINCENT
Second Lieutenant Christopher James Edward Vincent joined the Second Battalion The Rhodesian Africa Rifles as a Platoon Commander in March 1978. Since
that time he has been involved in thirty contacts during which his company eliminated two hundred terrorists. In all his contacts, Second
Lieutenant Vincent had displayed commendable coolness and a high degree of aggression which have contributed directly to the success of his
sub-unit.
In his first contact, Second Lieutenant Vincent killed the only terrorist accounted for. Shortly afterwards he
was concussed by a terrorist grenade which exploded within one yard of him and which permanently damaged his eardrums. Within twenty four
hours he was again in action and personally killed three of the seven terrorists killed by his company.
On the 26th
April 1978, Second Lieutenant Vincent, through his tactical handling of a difficult situation in very thick bush, was responsible for the
killing of four terrorists and the capture of two others.
On the 9th October 1978 he parachuted into action against a large number of terrorists and terrorist recruits. He injured his neck on
landing, but despite the acute pain, remained in control of the ground forces for several hours, during which numerous and intense fire fights
took place. Largely due to his aggression and fine command ability, twenty terrorists and a large number of recruits were killed in the
action.
On the 15th October 1978 Second Lieutenant Vincent was leading a patrol of three men when they were
fired on by two terrorists at very close range.
Both machine guns jammed, leaving Second Lieutenant Vincent with the only weapon in the
patrol. Although in extreme physical danger, he stood his ground calmly returned fire, killing both the terrorists and thus saving his own life
and those of the other two members of his patrol.
Throughout his operational service, Second Lieutenant Vincent has shown outstanding leadership and a high degree of tactical skill. His
personal courage and aggression have inspired all those who have served with him.
